On International Credit Union Day, 17th October 2024, Merthyr Tydfil Borough Credit Union won two awards at the annual Credit Union of Wales Awards, held this year at the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.
In a change to voting to help engage more Credit Union members and raise the profile of Credit Union’s across Wales this year’s awards were voted for online. Our members and supporters embraced the opportunity to support our nominees voting and sharing the voting links regularly.
Our first winner of the night was Gareth Richards who won the ‘Member Making a Difference’ Award for the Treharris Community Together group, he set up with Jayne Edwards to formalize, fundraise and expand the community events they organize every year, the specific aim was to make them free to help with cost of living and support wellbeing for people of all ages to enjoy events through the year.
Following his win Gareth said ‘“As a member of Merthyr Tydfil Borough Credit Union for many years I was humbled to be nominated for an award and very honoured to have received one.
Thanks to everyone who voted. Merthyr Tydfil Borough Credit Union does tremendous good work within our community and I will endeavour to continue promote the Credit Union’s services”.
Our second winner of the night was our CEO, Delyth Shearing (pictured) who won the ‘Special Recognition’ Award. Delyth has been involved with Merthyr Credit Union for almost 22 years, and CEO for 19 and is the beating heart of the Credit Union.
Following her win, Delyth said ‘I was honoured to be nominated and delighted to win the 'Special Recognition Award', thanks to everyone who voted.
